80 Greater Mankato Delegates Traveling to Columbia, Missouri | Studying innovative ideas and best practices to bring back to Greater Mankato

(November 2, 2015) MANKATO, MINN. – Eighty business and community leaders depart this Sunday, November 8, for the fourth Greater Mankato Leadership Delegation InterCity Leadership Visit (ICLV). The group is traveling to Columbia, Missouri to study innovative ideas and best practices that may be adapted and brought to life in the Greater Mankato region. The delegates will be in Columbia November 8-11, 2015. The Greater Mankato Leadership Delegation was last convened in 2011 for a visit to Charlottesville, Virginia. Follow along on the trip using hashtag #gmgiclv.

Of particular interest will be the way Columbia has addressed top priorities identified by the Envision 2020 community plan that will include focuses on: business and economic development, workforce development and education, healthcare, downtown revitalization and cultural affairs, and sports facilities.  The ICLV Planning Committee and staff at GMG did extensive research and surveyed past delegates and community stakeholders to pick the best city that is demographically similar and has common and aspirational initiatives and community goals.

“ICLV trips have helped shaped many items in the community today such as revitalization of the City Center, our engagement with the arts, our online community events calendar, business development collaborations within the region and related regional visioning” said Jennifer Pfeffer, ICLV Planning Committee member. “It’s not only a time to learn and bring back ideas but also to reflect on the existing strengths of our marketplace.”

Columbia leaders also see great value in these types of visits and very recently traveled with a group comprised of 45 leaders to Gainesville, Florida from October 13-15. “Leadership visits provide first-hand opportunities to exchange best practices, generate new ideas, and share challenge areas with leaders from other communities,” said Columbia Chamber of Commerce President Matt McCormick.

“History has taught us that investments in InterCity Visit trips yield new ideas and strengthened connections that can and have translated into big gains for our community’s quality of life and place. We are fortunate Columbia is willing to share their stories and exchange their ideas and experiences with our delegation” said Trudie Gustafson, Executive Vice President of Greater Mankato Growth, Inc.

Leaders from the Columbia Chamber of Commerce have been instrumental in helping Greater Mankato Growth in planning this informative trip. “We welcome other communities to Columbia which allows us to learn and grow from each other,” McCormick said. “It also gives us the chance to showcase what makes Columbia a great place to live, learn, work and play.”
