Forbes ranks Greater Mankato 11th of “Best Small Places for Business and Careers”

Mankato, MINN (June 28, 2012) – Forbes today released its list of “Best Small Places for Business and Careers,” ranking Mankato 11th best. Forbes considers a “small place” to be as Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) with a population less than 250,000. The Mankato MSA, which is officially known as the Mankato-North Mankato MSA and includes all of Blue Earth and Nicollet counties, has a population of approximately 97,000 according to Forbes. Last year the MSA was 25th on the list.

“Continued rankings like this reaffirm Greater Mankato’s continued focus and presence as a place where businesses and employees can thrive,” said Greater Mankato Growth President & CEO Jonathan Zierdt. “Business success and career success really go hand in hand. Businesses need talented employees to be successful and employees want to be in a place where they can achieve career success.”

The “Best Small Places for Business and Careers” list included 147 MSAs. None of the other three MSAs that would be classified by Forbes as “small places” made the list. The Minneapolis-St. Paul MSA was ranked 22nd on Forbes list of “Best Places for Business and Careers,” which included 200 MSAs with populations greater than 250,000.

In compiling the annual list, Forbes considers 12 metrics relating to job growth (past and projected), costs (business and living), income growth over the past five years, educational attainment and projected economic growth through 2014. They also factor in quality of life issues like crime rates, cultural and recreational opportunities and net migration patterns, as well as the number of highly ranked colleges in an area. Business costs and educational attainment are given the most weighting in the overall ranking.
