GMG Board commits an additional $390,000 to increase region’s public policy presence

MANKATO, MINN. (July 24, 2012) - The Greater Mankato Growth (GMG) Board of Directors recently approved the organization’s plan to invest $390,000 over the next three years to raise the region’s profile among decision makers in St. Paul and throughout the state. Approximately $225,000 of the additional funding necessary to execute the new plan will come from GMG’s reserves, with the remaining generated through new earned revenue.

“Over the past few years, we have hosted Greater Mankato Day at the Capitol, which has started us on the path toward increasing awareness of our marketplace among legislators,” said Greater Mankato President & CEO Jonathan Zierdt. “But to be as effective as we need to be, it’s going to take a year-round investment.”

Despite the region’s significant positive impact on the state’s economy, many leaders still have an unclear or inaccurate view of Greater Mankato. “I spoke with one legislator from the metro, who thought Mankato was a town of only 10,000 people, as well as a staffer who had no idea about the size of our economy and what we contribute to the state’s budget. And these are by no means isolated events,” said Zierdt.

As part of the new plan, GMG will hire a new dedicated position, responsible for working with current area lawmakers, as well as communicating with legislators and other influential state leaders the attributes and needs of Greater Mankato. The ideal candidate will be someone with strong communication and relationship building abilities, who is both familiar with and passionate about the advancement of the Greater Mankato marketplace.

And while GMG is upping the ante in terms of its financial investment in public affairs, individual business involvement will continue to be critical. “By raising their individual voices, our businesses can provide lawmakers and leaders with the full spectrum of thoughts and ideas coming out of our marketplace,” explained Zierdt. To this end, GMG will also utilize the funding to expand on its existing efforts to connect the business community with local and state leaders through surveys, issues dialogues and candidate forums, as well as awareness events, such as Greater Mankato Day at the Capitol.

“This is an exciting, bold and aggressive move for our region and to be successful it will take a community-wide effort, so that Greater Mankato can assume its rightful place at the table among the other regional centers in our state.”
