Greater Mankato Growth Expands Areas of Work: Announces Commitment to Agricultural Business Work across South Central Minnesota
Mankato, MINN (November 17, 2014) – The Greater Mankato Growth (GMG) Board of Directors recently approved the organization’s plan to invest approximately $370,000 over the next three years to work on building the existing agricultural business prominence in the region and maximize the growing economic marketplace with the goal of becoming the premier ag business epicenter in the United States. Approximately $250,000 of the additional funding necessary to execute the new plan will come from GMG’s reserves, with the remaining generated through new earned revenue and external funding.
“This announcement is the result of more than two years of work and research from Greater Mankato Growth and ag related businesses” said Jonathan Zierdt, President & CEO of Greater Mankato Growth. “We aim to galvanize interest in ag business and strive to build off the existing and diverse assets that this region already boasts.”
Agriculture is currently the largest business industry segment across the South Central Minnesota Agricultural Region (SCMAR) with approximately $6.3 billion in sales annually. Spanning an economic continuum from production, processing, professional services, education, technology, research, manufacturing, transportation and more; a majority of businesses in the region are either part of ag’s value stream or indirectly impacted. The region boasts an extensive list of ag business concentration and industry dominance. To that end, GMG is partnering with ag businesses across South Central Minnesota and Northern Iowa to strategically build on and connect the region’s extensive ag business assets in order to develop and position the South Central Minnesota Agricultural Region as the premier ag business epicenter.
"Like other dominate industry clusters in the United States, Silicon Valley or The Research Triangle for example, if you are a person or a business that finds value in being connected to the ag business industry, the South Central Minnesota Agricultural Region is where you will want to be” said Zierdt.
As part of the new plan, GMG will hire a dedicated person to serve as the chief steward, strategist and organizer of the initiative. They will be organizing and aligning the collective work of stakeholders to promote investment in ag business across SCMAR. The ideal candidate will be someone with strong strategic, project management and implementation, relationship building and communication skills, who is both intimately familiar with and passionate about the region and it’s ag business industry.
