Mankato Marathon Going One-Hundred Percent Virtual

The Mankato Marathon presented by Mayo Clinic Health System has made the difficult decision to move to 100% virtual for all of its races. The decision came after a tremendous amount of due diligence as the event organizers tried to see if any sort of in-person races could still occur this year. In the end the Visit Mankato Board came to the conclusion that in-person races were not going to be feasible in the face of many barriers and as the persistent risk of spreading COVID-19 overwhelmed a guarantee to maintain the safety of runners, volunteers, staff and the community.

Runners will get to choose where and when to run their event between October 12-26.

Anna Thill, Visit Mankato president shared, “Not having the ability to bring the Mankato Marathon running community together for the 11th year is sincerely heartbreaking. With that said, even more heartbreaking is the idea that our event could jeopardize even one life or potentially be the cause of spread in our beloved community and therefore cause the shutdown of businesses and the ability for our children to go to classes in their schools. We strive for excellence, not just for our runners, but also for our community. When that is compromised not just from one but from many angles, we must act and move with ultimate focus where excellence can be achieved.”

The Mankato Marathon Team is now turning their full attention to producing an excellent virtual event with fun and interactive experiences for registered runners who can participate virtually from around the world. In addition, the Team is still going to host the Scheels Sport & Health Expo and packet pick-up at the River Hills Mall October 16 – 17 for locals and those who may still make a trip to Mankato to run a local route.
