Fifth Annual Pedal Past Poverty

Partners for Affordable Housing

Mankato, MINN (February 2, 2017) Back for the fifth year, Partners for Affordable Housing is hosting their annual Pedal Past Poverty event on Saturday, February 25 at the Mankato YMCA. This unique stationary bike race has been a key element for Partners for Affordable Housing to raise funds to help fight homelessness in the Mankato community.

Over 50 teams of ten individuals will gather at the YMCA ready to pedal to the limit and help raise funds that will directly benefit the work that Partners does in the community. This event has become popular within the community over the past several years and is not just for the biking enthusists! Riders from ages ten - 99 jump on a bike and pedal for a 20 minute heat. While prizes are given out each heat, the event is more about having a fun time while supporting a great cause.

Music and entertainment is provided by Radio Mankato. Teams are encouraged to wear costumes and decorate the area around their bike. The atmosphere gets loud and is spirited as people encourage their fellow team members along. Through all the excitement however there are reminders on why people have gathered to bike. Signs that share personal reasons why the biking event is so important to the clients of Partnters. These messages express how over 200 local citizens are impacted each night through the various programs provided by Partners for Affordable Housing.

Each night, the Theresa House and Welcome Inn will house up to 11 families and is at capacity most nights. More than 9,000 bed-nights are being served between the Theresa House and Welcome Inn in a 12 month period. Forty-one percent of all shelter guests are children under the age of 18. “There is a great need for more emergency housing in the Mankato area,” says Deb Newman, Partners for Affordable Housing Executive Director, “This past fall, we were provided a variance by the State of Minnesota to increase our bed space within the two shelters. This will allow us to provide assistance to more families or individuals in need in our community. Our ultimate goal is to see homelessness eradicated in the area; in the meantime, we are actively searching for a new shelter location that would allow for us to serve more families in need.”

There is still time and plenty of ways to get involved with this year’s Pedal Past Poverty. While space is getting limited, there are still spots available for new teams to sign up. Each team is asked to raise $1,000 for the event. There are many different volunteer opportunities for the day, including registration, mileage recorders and tear down. Local businesses still have an opportunity to be come an event sponsor. Donations are also being accepted through Partners for Affordable Housing’s website www.partnersforhousing.org/pedal. “We are looking forward to a great 5th Annual Pedal Past Poverty event,” Newman says, “This community is incredible when it comes to rallying support for important causes or needs within Greater Mankato.”
