HOMELESS SHELTERS & SENIOR COMMUNITIES PARTNER FOR UNIQUE HOLIDAY PROJECT
MANKATO - Three area senior living communities have partnered with Mankato’s two homeless shelters and Freedom Home Care to wrap holiday gifts donated to families experiencing a temporary housing crisis.
Gift Wrapping Schedule:
Primrose Retirement Communities – 1 p.m., Wednesday, December 14
Oak Terrace Senior Communities – 10 a.m. Friday, December 16
Old Main Village Senior Living Community – 10:30 a.m. Monday, December 19
Every year Partners for Affordable Housing, parent agency for Mankato’s two homeless shelters: Theresa House and the Welcome Inn, coordinates the distribution of holiday gifts to nearly 40 homeless and formerly homeless families in our region. Gifts are purchased through the generosity of local donors and wrapped by volunteers.
“The holidays should be a time of joy and for the families we serve, this would not be possible without the generous support of local community members,” said Liz Zaruba, Communications & Volunteer Coordinator at Partners for Affordable Housing.
For the third year, Primrose, Oak Terrace and Old Main residents will wrap the donated gifts. Freedom Home Care will provide the wrapping paper, tape and holiday treats required for the three events. Partners for Affordable Housing will deliver the unwrapped gifts and serve as assistants to the senior wrappers. All wrapped gifts will be distributed to families during the days preceding the Christmas holiday.
In 2014 Christine Nessler, Business Relations and Co-Owner of Freedom Home Care, heard about PAH’s need for volunteers. Through her connections to local Senior Communities, Nessler knew that these residents were looking for meaningful community engagement. A unique and fun project was born.
“Partners for Affordable Housing needed volunteers and senior living communities have people eager to help, so it just made sense to coordinate that partnership,” said Nessler. “We were so happy to be able to help in this small way because we know just how important Partners for Affordable Housing is for our community.”
“The residents of Primrose of Mankato look forward to any opportunity to give back to the community they have spent a majority of their life raising children in, working in and living in,” said Hannah Barnlund, Life Enrichment Coordinator of Primrose of Mankato. “The residents enjoy opportunities to help others all year round, not just the holiday season.”
