Mankato Sports Commission Play it Awards Grants Announced

MANKATO, Minn. (January 21, 2019) — The Mankato Sports Commission is pleased to announce that a total of $15,000 has been awarded through their PlayIt Awards Grant Program. Joy Leafblad, Sports Commission Director, stated that this year 14 sports organizations received grant dollars for their local sporting events and tournaments, 4 of them representing new events to the community in 2019. The grant funds will help support the operational needs to host a sporting event, such us facility rental, new equipment needed for the event and marketing.

The Mankato Sports Commission has a mission to help drive the sporting economy in the Greater Mankato area by supporting local sports organizations, bringing new events and  helping to improve established area events. The PlayIt Awards Grants are one way that the Mankato Sports Commission supports the efforts of our sports organizations. The PlayIt Awards Grant uses an overriding criterion used to select the award recipients based on the economic impact and time of year. Applications for 2020 events will be due December 1, 2019.

Mankato Sports Commission provides yearlong support to all local sports organizations in the community. In 2018 the Sports Commission supported 72 events with a total estimated economic impact of $17.2 million. Other support offered to events includes; marketing support, volunteer outreach, advocacy, program development assistance, along with some basic equipment (safety vests, fencing, tents).
