Nursing Programs Receive ACEN Accreditation

South Central College

North Mankato, MN (April 11, 2018) – The Accrediting Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) today announced the accreditation of South Central College’s nursing programs. South Central College offers a Professional Nursing (RN) associate degree program and a Practical Nursing (LPN) diploma program.

South Central College (SCC) has been offering nursing at its Faribault campus since 1964, when the program was transitioned from the local hospital that previously offered it. SCC’s nursing program in North Mankato started in 1968, the year the college moved into its new campus there.

SCC’s path to initial accreditation began in 2011 when the Minnesota State Board of Nursing (MBON) announced that in order to receive state accreditation all nursing programs would be required to be nationally accredited by 2016, with MBON later extending the deadline to the end of 2018. Prior to this new MBON requirement many colleges, including SCC, operated with just state accreditation.

“Achieving accreditation is not an overnight process. It takes years of work. I am so grateful to our previous Dean of Allied Health and Nursing Michele Brielmaier, current Interim Dean Candy Mortenson-Klimpel and our many dedicated nursing faculty members who have worked tirelessly over the past several years to achieve this accreditation for our students,” said Dr. Annette Parker, president of South Central College. “This is a tremendous accomplishment in the long positive history of our nursing program, which provides exceptional healthcare professionals to our communities.”

According to MBON’s 2017 Annual Nursing Education Program Report, at the end of 2017 just 27% of Practical Nursing (LPN) programs in Minnesota were nationally accredited and 54% of the state’s Professional Nursing (RN) associate degree programs were nationally accredited.

One of the requirements for national accreditation is an average pass rate of 75% over a three year period for graduates taking the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) for the first time. South Central College’s average first time pass rate on the NCLEX for 2017 was 97.06% for the Professional Nursing (RN) program and 90.00% for the Practical Nursing (LPN) program. These percentages were well above the national average for first time NCLEX test takers, which were 84.24% for Professional Nursing (RN) programs and 83.85% for Practical Nursing (LPN) programs.
