DESCRIPTION:As part of the statewide What We Can Do Weeks initiative\, Majority in the Middle invites elected officials\, community leaders\, and the public to a special event to sign the Civic Pledge for a Better Minnesota\, affirming a commitment to reject political violence and foster civic trust. \nThe event will be held Tuesday\, September 16 from 12:00–1:00pm at the Bridge Plaza building in Mankato. Attendees will have the opportunity to publicly sign the pledge\, connect with others committed to strengthening democracy\, and learn more about how small actions can lead to meaningful change. \n“Signing the Civic Pledge is a simple but powerful act\,” said Shannon Watson\, executive director of Majority in the Middle. “It’s a way to say\, ‘I believe in a Minnesota where we can disagree without being disagreeable\, and where we work together to make things better.’” \nAndy Wilke\, Executive Vice President of Greater Mankato Growth\, added:\n“Mankato thrives when we show up for each other — not just in business\, but in civic life. This pledge is about creating a community where people feel safe\, heard\, and empowered to lead with respect. We’re proud to support this effort.” \nThe event is free and open to the public\, but advance RSVPs are required at www.whatwecandoweek.org/pledge. \nThe Civic Pledge is part of What We Can Do Weeks\, a nonpartisan initiative designed as an opportunity to broaden our circles\, encourage dialogue\, and build relationships\, to ultimately support peaceful political engagement and the rejection of political violence. As political polarization has increasingly become a factor in our communities\, schools\, civic organizations and businesses\, we’re all learning how to navigate divides. Join us to learn about the (sometimes surprising) origins of division and actual steps you can take to bring down the temperature. \nProgram includes a box lunch. Registration cost: $10 \nShannon Watson is the Founder and Executive Director of Majority in the Middle. She has also served in policy and public affairs roles for the Medical Alley Association\, St. Paul Area Chamber\, U.S. Bank\, the Minnesota Senate\, and the National Conference of State Legislatures. Shannon has 20+ years of experience in electoral politics\, advising candidates and working on campaigns on both sides of the aisle. Shannon holds a bachelor’s degree in English\, Theatre\, and Psychology from Wichita State University and a master’s degree in Advocacy and Political Leadership from the University of Minnesota-Duluth. \nMajority in the Middle is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization giving those in the political middle a place to gather outside the extremes\, elevating voices of people who are modeling behavior we want to see\, and working on ways to bring a little more civility and a little less partisanship to our politics.
